US Layoffs — June 2020

The US labor market showed continued flux as employers recorded 1,196 WARN Act notices in June 2020, covering approximately 138,225 workers — marking a decline from May and up 441% versus June 2019. Filings came from 45 states and territories, with an average of 116 workers per notice.

Top States by Workers Affected

California led the nation with 31,885 workers affected across 393 notices , followed by Illinois (16,333 workers) and New York (11,120 workers) .

Industry Breakdown

The Accommodation & Food sector accounted for the largest share of job cuts with 55,538 workers across 407 notices. At the same time, Manufacturing reported 24,755 workers.

Layoff Type Analysis

Closures accounted for 17% of all affected workers nationally, with the majority of events being layoffs rather than full closures.

Largest Layoffs

Leading the list was Boeing in Seattle, Washington, reporting 5,798 affected workers. Verity Health System of California, Inc. DBA St. Francis Medical Center followed with 2,030 workers.

Trend & Outlook

This is the third consecutive month of declining layoff activity.

The filings reflect a mixed picture for the nation's labor market, with activity diverging between monthly and annual comparisons. The Accommodation & Food sector warrants close attention heading into the next period.
