US Layoffs — December 2023

The US labor market showed continued flux as employers recorded 438 WARN Act notices in December 2023, covering approximately 30,985 workers — marking a decline from November and up 14% versus December 2022. Filings came from 29 states and territories, with an average of 71 workers per notice.

Top States by Workers Affected

California led the nation with 10,000 workers affected across 255 notices , followed by Michigan (6,498 workers) and Ohio (2,872 workers) .

Industry Breakdown

The Manufacturing sector accounted for the largest share of job cuts with 12,239 workers across 76 notices. At the same time, Information & Technology reported 5,044 workers.

Layoff Type Analysis

Closures accounted for 18% of all affected workers nationally, with the majority of events being layoffs rather than full closures.

Largest Layoffs

Leading the list was Fca US in Detroit, Michigan, reporting 2,453 affected workers. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles followed with 2,453 workers.

Trend & Outlook

This is the third consecutive month of declining layoff activity.
