US Layoffs — April 2019

The US labor market showed continued flux as employers recorded 334 WARN Act notices in April 2019, covering approximately 31,938 workers — marking a decline from March and down 5% versus April 2018. Filings came from 38 states and territories, with an average of 96 workers per notice.

Top States by Workers Affected

California led the nation with 6,945 workers affected across 88 notices , followed by New York (2,984 workers) and Texas (2,217 workers) .

Industry Breakdown

The Manufacturing sector accounted for the largest share of job cuts with 7,575 workers across 77 notices. At the same time, Information & Technology reported 4,718 workers.

Layoff Type Analysis

Closures accounted for 45% of all affected workers nationally, indicating significant structural workforce adjustments.

Largest Layoffs

Leading the list was ABM Aviation in Atlanta, Georgia, reporting 1,121 affected workers. The College of New Rochelle - Main Campus followed with 857 workers.

Trend & Outlook

This is the third consecutive month of declining layoff activity.

The filings reflect a easing in workforce disruptions across the nation, with filings falling below both recent and year-ago levels. The Manufacturing sector warrants close attention heading into the next period.
