US Layoffs — July 2001

The US labor market showed signs of rising strain as employers submitted 153 WARN Act notices in July 2001, putting at risk an estimated 27,024 workers — up substantially from June and up 199% versus July 2000. Filings came from 12 states and territories, with an average of 177 workers per notice.

Top States by Workers Affected

Texas led the nation with 5,582 workers affected across 32 notices , followed by Ohio (4,550 workers) and Illinois (4,239 workers) .

Industry Breakdown

The Manufacturing sector emerged as the hardest-hit sector with 11,283 workers across 58 notices. Separately, Information & Technology reported 5,371 workers.

Layoff Type Analysis

Closures accounted for 28% of all affected workers nationally, with the majority of events being layoffs rather than full closures.

Largest Layoffs

Topping the list was (LTV) Cleveland Workers in Cleveland, Ohio, reporting 2,387 affected workers. Alcatel USA, Inc. - Plano followed with 940 workers.

Trend & Outlook

After a dip last month, layoff activity has ticked back up.

These figures highlight mounting pressure on the the nation labor market, with activity running above both recent and year-ago benchmarks. The Manufacturing sector warrants close attention heading into the next period.
